Although no one knows the origins of cheese, it’s become a staple of nearly every household in the developed world. The advent of cheese predates written history, and its independent creation can be traced to numerous areas of the globe — Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The miracle substance is a true wonder food: easy to store and keep, high in protein, and calorie-dense. Even the most scrupulous weekly meal planner needs to look for versatile foods, and what better ingredient than cheese? Here are five rare cheeses you should try at your earlier opportunity.

 5. Brie De Meaux

France is known for brie, and in the world of brie, Brie De Meux is as good as it gets. This pungent variety is more viscous than your typical wheel. Fattier than its cousin Camembert, Brie De Meaux won’t come cheap. It runs $20 a pound.

 4. Drunken Goat

 This high-fat goat cheese hails from the south of Spain. It’s aged for nearly three months before being soaked in red wine for several days. The finished product has an appealing purple hue.

 3. Taleggio

 Taleggio is a popular Italian cheese, but isn’t well-known in the United States. One reason is that it ages very quickly which makes it difficult to export cost effectively. Taleggio is creamy and well-suited to desserts.

 2. Kwaito

 South Africa isn’t often associated with cheese, but Kwaito posses a unique flavor that shouldn’t be looked over by aficionados . The name comes from the Isicamtho tongue and, roughly translated, means “cool”.

 Pont l-Evenque is one of France’s oldest (and most fragrant) delicacies. It’s extremely pungent aroma and soft consistency make it a popular choice for fondue, and over 3,500 metric tons are manufactured each year.
