The Special Olympians will be attending a state competition next week, according to Moab Police Chief Jim Winder.
“The Torch Run has traditionally been hosted by law enforcement, and it’s intended to generate interest from a fund-raising perspective so that we can send athletes to the Wasatch Front to compete in the state games. They have been operating on a shoe-string budget,” said Winder. “We are also trying to improve the sporting opportunities for our own residents. We hope to build a bacci ball court, possibly at Swanny Park, and develop a golf program.”
Winder hopes the resurgence of the Torch Run will help to involve the whole community in providing enrichment for Special Olympians, and that more individuals from throughout the Moab area will want to participate in the future.
