The Grand County girls softball team gave up two in a doubleheader last week, falling to South Sevier, 1-5 and 6-10, at home.
The losses followed a split at Richfield where the Lady Devils picked up an 18-15 win in the second game of another double bill. They fell to Richfield 15-14 in the opener.
Last week’s games put the Lady Devils at 6-10 overall and 2-5 in 3A Region 15 play.
Grand 1, South Sevier 5
The Lady Devils fell to the Lady Rams on April 5 despite outhitting them by three hits in the game. South Sevier’s pitching staff allowed Grand nine hits and a single run by Jessica Jones in the fifth inning. Jones, who was also the pitcher for Grand County, countered with a five-hit, five-run performance while striking out five batters.
In addition to her two hits, Jaci Shumway earned an RBI to send Jones home. Tyra Robertson and Hailey Cox also added two hits apiece, and Reagan Paxman and Hannah Tangren each recorded hits.
On the mound, Jones faced 30 batters and threw 52 strikes on 94 pitches.
Grand 6, South Sevier 10
For five innings the Lady Devils led South Sevier, going up 6-1. A sixth-inning spate of nine consecutive runs by the Lady Rams put away any chance, however, of a Grand County victory.
On offense, Shumway led the Lady Devils by collecting four hits, including a home run in the fifth inning. The homer was one of three on the day as Cox sent one over the fence in the fifth inning, and Robertson dinged one in the sixth inning. Shumway, Paxman and Robertson each tallied multiple hits in the game.
On the mound, Courtney Noyes threw for five innings and allowed six runs on seven hits while walking six. Relievers Jones and Shumway allowed four more runs off four hits and gave up two walks.
Grand 14, Richfield 15
Some of the best games in softball and baseball come down to the last play of the game, though unfortunately for the Lady Devils such a play went against them in their 15-14 loss to Richfield on April 4. The game, tied at 14-14 in the sixth inning, came down to a single off Richfield’s Abi Janke — off a first pitch by Jones — to score one run and give the Lady Cats the victory.
Earlier, the game had been a comeback story for the Lady Devils as they battled from four runs behind in the sixth inning to even it up. Grand scored four runs in the failed comeback attempt as Robertson dinged a homer, Noyes smashed a double and Tangren was walked. Five Lady Devil runs in the fifth came off the firepower of Cox, Noyes, Jones and Hannah Owen who each drove in runs.
On the mound Jones went a full seven innings, throwing 94 strikes on 176 pitches. She allowed 14 runs on eights and struck out five.
Grand 18, Richfield 15
Victory was sweet revenge for the Lady Devils as they put away Richfield in the second game of the doubleheader, 18-15. It was a game that saw Tangren as the hero when she hit a walk-off double in the eighth inning to score three and secure the win.
The bats were hot all game long for Grand County; Robertson recorded four hits in six at-bats to lead the Lady Devils, while Paxman and Jones each homered in the early going. Cox smashed a triple while Robertson, Tangren, Owen, Shumway and Akyra McNeely each added doubles.
The duties at the mound went to Noyes, who pitched all eight innings and allowed 14 runs on 15 hits, all while striking out eight Lady Cats.
