Fielding errors hampered otherwise solid play as the Grand County High School baseball team won one of three games at last weekend’s round-robin tournament in Moab. The Red Devils lost to both Manti and Gunnison on Friday, March 15, before coming back to defeat North Sanpete in decisive fashion the following afternoon.

Grand started off the day Friday with a 7-5 loss to the Manti Templars.

“We should have won that game, but we made too many errors in the field,” said GCHS assistant coach Ron Dolphin.

Dolphin noted that the Red Devils out-hit the Templars 6-5 but committed seven errors on defense.

Senior Aaron Lewis took the pitching loss for Grand. The Red Devils had just two extra-base hits in the game: a pair of triples by junior Koi Cook.

In their game against Gunnison later that same afternoon, the Red Devils gave up three runs in the first inning, but came back to tie the score 3-3 in the second inning. The Bulldogs then batted in three more runs in the third inning to take the lead for good. Grand ended up on the losing end of a 6-4 decision after seven innings of play.

Both teams had six hits during the game, but Grand again committed seven fielding errors, whereas the Bulldogs made just one error. Cameron Taylor, a junior, belted a double for Grand. Cook was the losing pitcher.

On Saturday afternoon, Grand handed the North Sanpete Hawks an 18-1 loss. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. The Red Devils led 10-0 after two innings then scored seven more runs in their fourth and final inning at bat.

Senior Preston Walston was the winning pitcher and also hit two doubles and a triple in the game. Also getting extra-base hits for Grand were Lewis, Cook, and Dalton McElhaney, who each had one double, while Ronnie Dolphin added a triple.

This week, Grand (now 4-2 overall) was scheduled to play the San Juan Broncos at Moab on Tuesday, March 19, followed by a trip to Nucla, Colo., on Friday, March 22. Nucla will travel to Moab to play the Red Devils on Saturday, March 23. Saturday’s varsity game starts at noon and the junior varsity game begins at 2 p.m.
