Last season, the Red Devil boys’ team placed third overall in the Region 15 championship, and the girls placed fourth. Manti ended up grabbing the title in the boys division, and North Sevier took it for the girls.
According to assistant coach Randy Martin the team has a deep roster this season, with the combined turnout for boys and girls landing at about 55 athletes.
There will be a total of seven seniors this year, with Abby Mason and Hannah Stripeika representing the girls’ side and Ryan Lewis, Zach Rock, Ruben Villalpando, Brayden Schultz and Dakota Johnson for boys. Schultz is fresh off a stellar Red Devils basketball season, and Johnson is fully recovered from an injury he sustained playing football.
Some of the Lady Devils basketball stars will be joining the track team as well. Junior Annabelle Garrett will be a key asset in the high jump, and Veda Gritts will be one of the top contenders in shot put, javelin and discus. Freshman Kylah Ricks will also be a top contender in long-distance runs.
There will be a few familiar rivals at the invite this weekend, including Richfield, San Juan, Whitehorse, Emery and Monticello.
According to Martin, the fact that GCHS is now 3A will not necessarily affect the track team. “In track, the fact that you’re in 2A or 3A doesn’t mean [athletes] are running any faster or slower. Here it’s all time based,” Martin said. “We have some very talented athletes, and we’re expecting great things.”
