I would like to point out Moab Charter School’s role in the Beverly Taylor Sorenson arts program. In the Times article last week about Beverly’s visit to Moab to promote parent involvement and support of her efforts, Moab Charter School’s role was not mentioned.
Both Red Rock Elementary and Moab Charter School wrote separate grants in the spring of 2008 seeking inclusion in the program. In a unique move, the program directors awarded the grant to both schools. We worked together to hire Bruce Hucko, and Bruce divides his time between both schools, coming to Moab Charter every Monday to work with our kids.
I used my time at the evening event hosting Beverly to talk about how much the kids love working with Bruce Hucko. He is a great artist, and the program creates a powerful opportunity to put kids in the unique place of being tutored by a community artist on a weekly basis.
Beverly was trying to get the community to rally around her efforts to bring the arts into the schools across Utah as a meaningful component of the curriculum. The students, parents, and staff at Moab Charter are grateful that the program directors included both public schools, and we hope that our Legislature finds a way to continue supporting this important program.
