They do not need zip lines. They do not need hummer tours. They do not need people swinging off arches and cliffs. They do not need Mill Creek Canyon turned into a sacrifice zone. They damn sure do not need the constant buzz of helicopters giving lazy tourists a birds-eye view of treasures they should have to find for themselves, and would appreciate more if they did.
Take a close look at your reflection in the mirror, you “greenies” – you adventure tour cowboys, you event promoters. What motivates you – is it to protect the environment (LOL), is it to enhance the local community, or is it just to suck money out of non-residents who could give a crap what their impact is here? The mirror does not lie. You can do that anywhere.
Please stop doing it here. Please, Grand County and Moab city (who are you serving?) Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club (we know who you are serving), etc., stop promoting our town as a place where we exist just to serve people looking for a not-so-cheap thrill.
There are plenty of people out there making money, I’m sure. But time after time after time after time, it has been proven that the chase after short-term gain leads to long-term disaster. (Don’t get me started on oil and gas exploration and fracking.)
Abbey and Stiles saw it coming decades ago, and we’ve seen it before in hundreds of places that used to be great places to actually live.
It’s your town folks. What do you want?
