The Red Devils defeated Manti (47-36), San Juan (54-15) and Carbon (48-30).
“We’re a little bit out of shape, we’ve got to get back into shape because of the holidays, there are only so many days you can practice” Coach Wells stated. “As individuals, I think we did pretty good individually ... there are 14 weights [classes] to be filled ... we only filled seven, so we give up points,” Wells reflected. “We went up against Delta. They’re one of the tougher teams in the state and that was pretty rough, but as the meet went on, we got stronger and stronger.”
In a match against Manti, Carson Whitney pulled double duty for the team. He wrestled in the 106-pound and 113-pound weight classes and won both. Whitney went 8-3.
Chris Thompson, 145-pound class, had a record of 6-3 in Richfield. According to Wells, Jarom Shumway had a great meet. Shumway, 220, won all but one of his matches.
“The main thing is where we are when it comes to region and state ... at the top of the Richfield tournament I thought we looked out of shape, but our guys got better and better throughout ... I don’t think we looked that bad after being out of it for two weeks,” Wells laughingly stated. “Region and state are coming up. We’ve got a lot of work to do between now and then.”
The team is in Gunnison for the Gunnison Invite on Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12.
