GCHS swimmers show improved speed in Price

  The Grand County High School swim team competed at a three-team meet in Price, Utah on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

  According to GCHS coach Brian Pierce, the event was the Red Devils’ last scheduled meet before the upcoming regional championships later this month. Host Carbon High School and nearby Emery High rounded out the competition at the meet.

  “In the first event, the girls’ 200-yard medley relay started the team off with a great race,” Pierce said, noting that the girls took third place and dropped 8.9 seconds off their previous best time.

Competing in that event were Sierra Indergard (backstroke), Robin Willscheidt (breaststroke), Zarena Rigby (butterfly), and Kayla Weston (freestyle). 

  In the girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay, Gaby Meyer, Gabbie Martineau, Sarah Quigley, and Brianna Ballard combined to take third place with a time of four minutes, 46.01 seconds, Pierce added.

  The GCHS girls’ team also took fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Indergard, Willscheidt, Brianna Ballard, and Weston each swimming 50 yards in that event.

  In the girls individual races, Indergard and Weston both made strong showings in the 50-yard freestyle race,. Indergard posted a time of 32.43 seconds and Weston was less than a half second behind at 32.89. They placed fifth and sixth overall out of 23 swimmers in the race, Pierce said, adding that Weston also placed fourth out of 12 competitors in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:18.04.

Martineau bested her 100-yard freestyle time by 7.07 seconds, while teammate Katie Winget recorded a personal best time in the 200-yard freestyle, shaving 8.43 seconds off her previous best time.

  The Red Devil boys also made a good showing at the meet, Pierce said.

  Freshman River Murdock placed third out of seven competitors in the 200-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 2:33.23. Also, sophomore Duncan Reidhead, competing in the 200-yard individual medley for the first time this season, placed fourth with a time of 2:49.93.  

  In the boys’ 100-yard butterfly, junior Jackson Knowles placed second with a time of 1:05.29, and also placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. 

  In the 100-yard breaststroke, teammates Drake Hackney and Treyton Helquist both dropped their times, with Hackney shaving 2.60 seconds off his previous best to finish fifth in a time of 1:24.47. Helquist improved his previous best time by 1.84 seconds to finish in 1:25.03, placing sixth out of 10 swimmers in that event, Pierce said.

  In the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay, Grand took second place, with Reidhead, Hackney, Murdock, and Knowles recording a time of 1:55.23.  

Wiley Sheldon, Knowles, Reidhead and Hackney took fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:43.76.

  Grand’s next swim meet will be the Region 12 championships in Price on Jan. 25 and 26. The state meet will be held Feb. 8-9 at Brigham Young University in Provo.
