Written and directed by KZMU manager Marty Durlin, Beautiful Radiant Things features a local cast, orchestra and crew. Laurel Hagen stars as Emma Goldman and Kya Marienfeld portrays the socialist Kate O’Hare; the two clash over politics and personality while trying to sway their sister inmates: Haley Austin as prostitute Hester Campbell; Jenna Whetzel as drug addict Lottie Funk; Michele Johnson as thief Lulu Bibbs; Ellen Hutto as counterfeiter Minnie Eddy; and Melissa Graciosa as “Aggie the Lifer.”
The orchestra is led by Jessica Retka on piano, with Bobby Hollahan on trombone and tuba; Jeff Gutierrez on saxophone; Miriam Graham on concertina and whistle; Josie Kovash on bass, and Doni Kiffmeyer on snare drum.
Marlene Mody and Doni Kiffmeyer performed sound effects on Foley Box, and Joanne Savoie served as assistant director and stage manager. Sound is by Dave Montgomery.
Beautiful Radiant Things is the third original musical radio play KZMU has produced in the past two years.
