The girls played 18 holes on the Lakeside-Bountiful state course on Wednesday, April 10. Senior Jessica Pyatt continued her record of strong performances for Grand, placing first overall and even scoring an eagle, which is two shots under par for a hole. That shot earned Pyatt seven points for the Lady Devils’ overall tally, the second-highest bonus that can be awarded on an individual hole.
Pyatt is now ranked second in the region, just two points behind the top-ranked player, who hails from Richfield High School.
Pyatt wasn’t the only Lady Devil player who gave a strong performance. Every competitor from Grand added points toward the team total. While Pyatt scored 78 points, sophomore Brooke Schultz tallied 51, and sophomores Molly Hines and Cora Johnston scored 38 and 26, respectively. Juniors Zoe Wuthrich and Alex Gomez had 21 and eight points, respectively, for Grand.
Despite the relative inexperience of its players, Grand is fielding some very talented golfers this year, according to head coach Penelope Butterfield. Both Pyatt and Schultz are ranked in the region’s top 10 players, Butterfield said. Pyatt is listed in second place, while Schultz holds the eighth-place spot.
“I’m just so proud of these girls,” Butterfield said. “We’ve got two of the top 10 players in the region and our other girls are ranked 11th, 12th, 13th, and 18th, so we have a lot of talent, which is really great on a team this young.”
Butterfield thanked the team’s co-coach, Rob Jones, for donating much of the equipment needed for a golf team, including balls, shirts, hats, and other practice and uniform materials.
This week, the Lady Devils were scheduled to play in a non-region tournament in Beaver on Tuesday, April 16.
