“We were a little disappointed, but our girls played hard,” said GCHS head coach Brian Ballard. “We’re still a young team, and most of our players will be back again next year. We had a great season, and competing at state was a good experience for us.”
In No. 1 singles, GCHS sophomore Kayla Weston was defeated by Victoria Barrera of St. Joseph, 6-1, 6-0.
In No. 2 singles, sophomore Brityn Ballard of Grand was defeated by Sarah Roston of Wasatch Academy, 6-1, 6-1. Roston went as far as the finals before losing to Grace Peterson of Waterford.
In No. 3 singles, Grand’s Robin Willscheidt was defeated by Sophia Nielsen of Rowland Hall, 6-0, 6-4.
In the No. 1 doubles bracket, Grand’s Jacey Johnson and Cora Johnston were defeated by Audra Thurston and Ali Koehler of St. Joseph, by the score of 6-3, 6-3.
In No. 2 doubles, Madison Stocks and Shalia Harmison of Grand were beaten in the first round by Amanda Higgs and Margy Maher of St. Joseph, 6-3, 6-3.
Manti ended up winning the state team title, edging runner-up Waterford by two points.
The team point totals were as follows: Manti 11, Waterford 9, Wasatch Academy 8, St. Joseph 7, San Juan 6, Delta 5, Rowland Hall 3, and Emery 1.
