The Grand County High School softball team won three out of its five games at the 2A state playoffs in Spanish Fork last weekend. The Lady Devils were one of just six teams remaining in the 16-team double-elimination tournament when they were finally eliminated by Manti on Friday, May 10.
“We had a good weekend,” said GCHS head coach Stephanie Cluff. “The girls played really well and made it further then anyone expected us to.”
The Lady Devils started off the tournament with an 11-1 victory over American Leadership Academy on Thursday, May 9. Junior Teaven Fredericks belted a home run for Grand in that contest.
Another highlight was a triple play made by freshman Madi Jones at third base. In the fifth inning, Jones caught a line drive, stepped on her base to get the runner out who had left the bag, then threw the ball to teammate Morgan Dalton to get the third out at second base.
Ahead 5-1 at the time, the Lady Devils then scored six more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 10 and end the game two innings early. Senior Donna Snow pitched the entire game and picked up the win for Grand.
Grand’s next contest was a quarterfinal matchup against Enterprise. The game was tied 2-2 after three innings, but the Lady Wolves began to pull away in the later innings and eventually emerged with an 8-3 victory over the Lady Devils. Snow, who took the pitching loss, was relieved in the final inning by freshman Rhiannon Bohannon.
That loss dropped Grand into the one-loss bracket, where the Lady Devils next faced Altamont on Friday morning. Grand cruised to a 10-0 shutout over the Lady Longhorns, with Snow picking up the win. Senior Amanda Sheets pitched the final inning for Grand.
The Lady Devils kept their momentum going with a 6-3 victory over the Gunnison Lady Bulldogs. Infielder Caitlin Pfinister picked a runner off first base to end the game, and Snow was again the winning pitcher.
The afternoon win against Gunnison put the Lady Devils up against defending state champion Manti on Friday evening. The Lady Templars built an early lead and came away with the 9-3 win, ending Grand’s five-game run at the tournament.
The next morning, Manti was eliminated by Enterprise, 10-2. The San Juan Lady Broncos, Grand’s Region 15 rival, ended up beating Enterprise 6-5 in the finals to win the state championship on Saturday. San Juan had a perfect 5-0 record at the tournament.
“Our girls worked hard all season and came together at the state tournament. We hit really well both days,” said Cluff of the Lady Devils. “You can’t ask for a better group of girls and they represented GCHS well.”
