On Saturday, Feb. 2, at Monroe, the Lady Devils faced the South Sevier Lady Rams in a region contest. South Sevier jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first period and eventually coasted to a 41-16 victory.
“It was the pretty much the same story,” said GCHS head coach Rick Lopez. “We got off to a slow start and couldn’t keep up with them.”
The Lady Devils’ had difficulty getting points on the board, Lopez said.
“We actually played pretty good defense, but we just couldn’t score on offense,” Lopez said. “We had a hard time getting the ball past their 1-2-2 zone. We really struggled against it.”
Senior Linda Minor led the team in scoring against the Lady Rams with six points, while Brook Schultz added three.
“Linda played a really good game, and did a good job of taking the ball in toward the basket,” Lopez said.
In a non-region game against Dove Creek, Colo., at Moab on Tuesday, Jan. 29, the Lady Devils kept the game close in the first half and trailed by just two points at halftime, 17-15. Early in the third period, Grand tied the score at 19-19, but then failed to score for several minutes thereafter, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to slowly extend their lead. Dove Creek went on to win the game by the score of 34-22.
Grand’s leading scorer for the contest was Schultz with six points; center Alexandra Gomez added five points for the Lady Devils.
This week, the Lady Devils’ regular season wraps up with two scheduled games: they play Emery on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 5 and then host San Juan at Moab on Thursday, Feb. 7. Grand’s senior players will be honored before Thursday’s game, which starts at 7 p.m.
Grand, which now has an overall record of 2-14, is winless in six region games, while San Juan is 1-5 in Region 15 play. If Grand should happen to beat San Juan on Thursday, the Lady Devils may have a shot at qualifying for the 2A playoffs. The two rivals last played each other at Blanding on Jan. 17, when San Juan won 52-23.
Nevertheless, coach Lopez says he thinks the Lady Devils will give the Lady Broncos a tougher game this week.
“I think it will be a different ball game this time,” he said.
