Earlier in the week, on March 26, the Lady Devils had lost a non-region contest to Union High School at Roosevelt by the score of 10-0. Union’s Madison Bostick pitched the entire game, striking out 10 and limiting the Lady Devils to just three hits.
“We just didn’t hit very well, and made lots of errors,” GCHS head coach Brook Shumway said of the contest against Union High.
Two days later, the Lady Devils came out strong against the North Sevier Lady Wolves, as Caitlin Pfnister belted a three-run homer early in the game, and later added two more RBIs to help the Lady Devils built a double-digit lead.
Grand went on to win the contest 13-0, as sophomore pitcher Rhiannon Bohannon went the distance for the victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader, freshman Tia Shumway started at pitcher and was later relieved by Bohannon. Grand won that game 15-6.
Pfinister hit an inside-the-park home run with the bases loaded in the second game against North Sevier. Tia Shumway also hit well both games, going 6-for-8 at the plate for the day.
“We finally hit the ball well,” said coach Shumway. “We were executing bunts and hit-and-run plays. Offensively, things went really well for us. We had runners on base in every inning.”
“We also played good defense,” Shumway added. “We had no errors at all in the first game, and Alena Geiser made some great plays at center field.”
This week, the Lady Devils are scheduled to take on South Sevier at Monroe on Friday, April 4.
