An organization called 500 Women Scientists is a group consisting of over 20,000 women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields across the world. The mission of the organization is “to serve society by making science open, inclusive and accessible.”

The group was started by a small number of women who went to grad school together at the University of Colorado, Boulder. One of those four women, Dr. Jane Zelacova, served an ecological post-doc position in Moab and has maintained ties here. Across the world, 500 Women Scientists has chapters, known as pods, of women working in STEM fields who work together to serve their local communities.

The Southeast Utah pod, which consists of more than 40 women in Moab and surrounding communities, has been honored recently by being named the Pod of the Week. The Southeast Utah pod is only the 17th out of nearly 300 worldwide to be given the honor and organizational spotlight. The group joins pods from Madrid, Spain; El Paso, Texas; Gothenburg, Sweden; and Seattle, Washington, among others in receiving this honor.

Among other things, the pod’s recognition is based on the group’s quick growth, establishing a voice with the national organization, and plans for community engagement activities, including taking on the upcoming Science for Guides training next spring.

Women from the local 500 Women Scientists pod will have a presence at the upcoming Moab Festival of Science Mingle on Friday, Oct. 5 on the Museum of Moab lawn, and on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Festival of Science’s STEMonstration at the Sun Court.

Come meet some of the women doing science at either of these events. Women working in a scientific field in southeastern Utah, especially a medical or veterinary field, are welcome at the pod’s next meeting. The local pod also speaks at local classrooms and organizations.
