MARC gingerbread house construction party gets kids, adults in holiday spirit

There will be something for adults as well as children during the Gingerbread House Construction Party at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center.

The party at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, will feature candy, candy and more candy for those with a sweet tooth. It also provides a chance for youngsters to show off their construction skills by fashioning houses made of graham crackers.

The benefits for adults? There’s no mess at home.

“The best part is the parents don’t have to clean up,” said MARC Director Laurie Collins. “That is the selling point. We will clean all the purple icing off the walls and all the Red Hots off the floor.”

This is the third year the event has been held at the MARC, 111 East 100 North. The cost is $18 for MARC members and $20 for the general public. Prices are $30 for parents with three or more children ($27 for MARC members), and scholarships are available.

“You build the basic structure of your house first and then we bring out the candy and it turns into total mayhem,” Collins said with a laugh.

The houses, which are held together with icing, dry overnight before being taken home the following day. The MARC makes its own special icing for the project.

Collins said the party is “a good father-son or mother-daughter thing.” Children at past events have ranged in age from 3 to 15, she said.

“Mom might bring four kids and she’ll work with the younger ones and the older ones work on their own,” Collins said.
