It’s a new year, and Mad Moose Events is ringing it in with a brand new event. Saturday, Jan. 27 will be the first “Arches Ultra” race, which will consist of a 50-mile race, a 50k, a half marathon and a 9k.

This event will provide an opportunity for runners to kick off 2018 with a challenging new running experience. The Arches Ultra will be the first trail race that features both the Klonzo and Bar-M trail systems. Like many of the other events organized by Mad Moose, the race will feature events for differing experience levels.

The 50-miler features about 4,000 feet of elevation gain, while the 50k sits at about 3,000. The half marathon only has about 1,000 feet of drop, and 500 for the 9k. Race organizer Justin Ricks estimates that there are already about 550 runners signed up to participate, and Mad Moose is expecting to host between 600 to 700 at the time of the race.

Ricks also stated that Mad Moose would be providing warm drinks for runners at stations throughout the trails. He also said heaters and tents will be provided for volunteers, but spectators should be advised that it will be quite chilly outside, and they are likely to be standing for long periods of time.

Mad Moose will be providing food at the aid stations as well, so runners will be able to enjoy snacks upon arrival at the finish line.

To get to the registration center on race day, runners will make a turn into Gemini Bridges parking lot north of downtown Moab.
