Moab man killed in accident on South U.S. 191

A Moab man was struck by a car and killed Saturday, Dec. 8, while apparently walking across U.S. 191 south of Moab. The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. near the top of Blue Hill at mile marker 113, according to a report from the Utah Highway Patrol.

Gregorio A. Roman, 52, was walking across the northbound lane of the highway when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old Texas woman, UHP trooper Brian Evans said. The woman and her brother, who was a passenger in her vehicle, called for help and administered CPR to Roman until emergency medical workers arrived on the scene, Evans said.

EMS workers administered CPR to Roman until the ambulance arrived at Moab Regional Hospital, but they were unable to revive him, according to the report. Roman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“It’s just sad all the way around,” Evans said.

The woman and her brother were driving from Texas to Washington state to care for their mother, according to the UHP report.

Evans said investigators are still trying to determine why Roman was walking across the highway.

“There was speculation at first that he had a broken down vehicle, but when we checked it started up and seemed fine,” Evans said. “There were some folks parked on the other side of the highway, so he may have been going to talk with them. But we haven’t been able to confirm that at this point.”

The UHP is still investigating the accident, Evans said.
