“Temperatures in the mid 90s with high humidity make for extremely difficult and challenging conditions for runners,” Martin said. “We train every day in the heat in Moab, but the conditions in Delta with heat and humidity were just brutal.”
Leading the way for the girls’ varsity team was senior Mercedes James, who finished eighth in a field of 85 runners with a time of 21 minutes, 34 seconds. GCHS freshman Jayelen Knowles finished 27th overall with a time of 22:46. She was followed by sophomore Annie Heywood, who had a time of 26:43, and freshman Alexa Pierce with a time of 27:54. Knowles’ time was the fifth best overall for a freshman at the meet.
“After talking to some of the team members once they had finished, we decided that our mental aspect was the most difficult part of the whole meet,” GCHS senior Mercedes James said. “Besides being in a slightly higher altitude, we individually knew how well we could do and our best course of action [to run hard] was always the answer.”
“The course was a really nice course so it wasn’t a bad race,” sophomore Annie Heywood said. “If it had been a little cooler we would have had great times.”
Leading the way for the boys varsity team was senior Jackson Knowles, who finished ninth in a field of 110 runners with a time of 17:55. The boys varsity team finished in eighth place overall from a field of 20 Western Slope Colorado high schools.
“The course was different than most of the runs we have run so far in that the whole was pretty much flat and all gravel,” Jackson Knowles said. “Despite the heat, the course gave us the opportunity to run really well.”
