First-year coach Mick Dunlavey said there are a total of 18 boys on Grand’s roster so far. “We’re a little short on [junior varsity] and will be missing a couple guys on Thursday, so we probably won’t have a JV game this week,” he said.
“I’m pretty happy with our team,” Dunlavey said. “They have great attitude and good focus.”
Among the key returning players for the Red Devils are junior Kobe Sobremesana, who led the team in scoring with 10 goals last season. He is expected to primarily play in the striker position, coach Dunlavey said.
Team captains Layton Call, Jacob Francis, and Andrew Hugentobler are also expected to provide skill and leadership on the field. Call, a senior, will return as the team’s goalkeeper, while Francis and Hugentobler are versatile players capable of playing either offense or defensive positions.
Other Red Devils expected to contribute include seniors Reyce Knutson and Jaydan Olsen, and juniors Duncan Reidhead, Justin Hawks, Tyson Saggboy, and Austin Pyatt. The team also has several younger players, including sophomores Joseph Shumway and Rylan Ruggeri, and freshmen Kenyon Birdwell, Sidney Shumway, Jonathan Park, and Jacob Johnston.
The Red Devils are hoping to improve on last year’s 7-8 season, which ended in a 9-1 loss to St. Joseph in the first round of the playoffs.
“We have a very strong midfield,” Dunlavey said. “Our main focus is going to be passing and positioning.”
