Grand County High School’s Red team, consisting of Deanna Irvin, Becca Farnsworth, Delaney Manley and Reyce Knutson, went undefeated and took first place in the varsity tournament, beating San Juan’s White team once and Carbon High’s White team twice.
Grand High’s White team, which included Austin Aubry, Emilia Cubelos, Cody Jones and Sammy Hansen, went 1-2 on the day, losing to Carbon White, beating San Juan Blue and losing to San Juan White.
In the junior varsity Quiz Bowl tournament held in a nearby room, Grand’s Red junior varsity team took third place overall. Members of that team were Kylie Haycock, Hannah Rice, Stacey Andrus and Keaton Farnsworth.
The Red team started off with a 110-40 win over the Grand White squad, consisting of Joshua LaRance, Mikayla Williams, Samantha Dutton and May Whittington. The Grand Red team then lost the next two matches to Emery and San Juan. In an earlier game, San Juan had also eliminated the Grand White team 100-85.
A total of 16 Grand County High School students participated in the event, with the Red Devils fielding two four-person teams in each bracket.
The next scheduled high school Quiz Bowl is Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Grand County High School. The events are sponsored and conducted by the Southeast Education Service Center in Price.
