Volleyball team sweeps Emery to score homecoming victory

The Grand County High School volleyball team won its homecoming contest last Tuesday, Sept. 25, defeating the Emery Lady Spartans in three straight games.

The Lady Devils won the the match 25-19, 25-22, and 25-14. Head coach Deb Hren attributed the win to the consistent play of several players, including Nikita Nelson, who led the team with 13 kills, and Tiffanie Whipple, who had nine kills.

Carly Dalton added seven solo blocks, and also served up seven points, including two aces, Hren said.

Grand’s six seniors – Nikita Nelson, Carly Dalton, Mikenzee Nelson, Kenzie Taysom, Linda Minor, and Gaby Meyer – were all honored before the homecoming match, and all were starters in the first game.

The victory was a measure of revenge for the Lady Devils, who had lost to Emery at Castle Dale, on Sept. 13. Both teams are now 1-3 in region play.

This week, the Lady Devils are scheduled to travel to Blanding to face the San Juan Lady Broncos in a region contest on Thursday, Oct. 4. The varsity game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

“Anyone who wants to come, we’d like to have a big crowd there to cheer us on like we had at homecoming,” Hren said. “We need to win at least three out of four of our remaining region matches in order to guarantee a spot in the state tournament.”

Hren said she has high hopes for the team as the Lady Devils head into the final matches of the season. 

“It’s totally within our grasp,” Hren said.

After the Blanding match, the Lady Devils are scheduled to travel to Richfield to play in a two-day invitational tournament on Oct. 5 and 6. Although the tournament won’t count toward Grand’s own standing in Region 15, Hren said the event will serve as a warm-up preview of possible state tournament opponents from Region 13, including the Enterprise Lady Wolves.

Next week, on Tuesday, Oct. 9. the Lady Devils are scheduled to host the Monticello Lady Buckaroos in another non-region match. Grand will wear pink uniforms during the match, which will also be the team’s annual “Swing for Life” event to raise money for breast cancer survivors and research.
