According to head coach Brian Pierce, the Red Devils have fielded approximately 20 athletes on the squad, including a roughly equal number of boys and girls.
The Red Devil swimmers include a mixture of grade levels, and their swimming experience is also varied, Pierce said.
“We have a few beginners, but also have several who have already been swimming competitively,” he said, noting that several members of the current GCHS team swam with the Moab Sea Devils (a Moab city recreational program) last year.
The Lady Devil swimmers who have recent competitive experience are sophomore Robin Willscheidt and freshman Kayla Weston. Others on the girls team include freshman Kaitlyn Winget; sophomores Kiva Blatter and Beilee Pilibosian; junior Sierra Indergard; and seniors Brianna Ballard, Nikysha Harmison, Gaby Meyer, Sarah Quigley, and Zarena Rigby.
For the Red Devil boys team, the majority of the squad has competitive swimming experience, including freshmen Drake Hackney and River Murdock; sophomore C.J. Hren; juniors Jackson Knowles, Wiley Sheldon, and Jaydan Olsen; and seniors Macrae Olsen and Elijah Sheets. Other swimmers on the squad include sophomore Duncan Reidhead, junior Treyton Helquist, and seniors Kris Kemp and James Martin.
Grand County High will compete in swimming as a member of Region 12, which includes 3A schools Carbon, Delta, and Spanish Fork, as well as 2A schools Emery and Richfield.
Although Grand holds regular practices at the Moab Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Red Devils can’t host any meets until an official touch-pad timing system is installed, team officials said. Fundraising efforts for such a timing system and scoreboard are currently underway.
The Red Devils have a total of nine season meets on the schedule over the next two months, followed by the Region 12 championships in Richfield on Jan. 25 and 26. The state championship meet is scheduled to take place at Brigham Young University in Provo on Feb. 8 and 9.
