Previously this season, Grand had struggled to get consistent performances from its No. 3 and No. 4 players. However, at Price the Red Devils’ game seemed to have stabilized.
Senior Dale Thomas was once again Grand’s top player, shooting a 76. He was closely followed by fellow senior Hunter Butterfield, who shot a 77. Tyson Saggboy and Hunter Peterson filled in the No. 3 and No. 4 slots, shooting an 82 and an 86, respectively, to bring home the victory for the Red Devils.
“We won pretty well,” said head coach Steve Hazlett. “We had a 321 team total which is really pretty good and is our lowest score in probably the last three or four weeks. We’ve started getting the scores in that we wanted for our last players, and we’re closer to where we want to be. Our last three competing players are still up in the air going into region, but we’re hopeful that things have stabilized some.”
Butterfield said he is also optimistic about the remaining season.
“I think we did a lot better than we’ve been playing before. There were a couple of kids who stepped up. I mean, all of us played good, our third player is solid now,” Butterfield said. “I don’t think we’ve got the fourth player quite down because it’s still a competition between the fourth, fifth and sixth players. But our top three are pretty solid. Going into region, I think we’ve got a really good chance of winning it. We’re ahead 44 strokes now in the region, which basically means if we go into region and just keep doing what we’ve been doing, we’ll take it.”
The Red Devils have one more tournament to play before heading to the region competition. On Wednesday, Sept. 26, Grand will host a home tournament at the Moab Golf Course. Hazlett said the team hopes to come away with another win and an even larger lead going into region.
The Moab tournament is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
