The third annual Plein Air Moab competition and art sale will be held Oct. 5-13 at a variety of venues through the area. The event is a weeklong gathering of local and nationally known artists who celebrate open-air painting in breathtaking environments, according to a news release from the Moab Arts and Recreation Center.

Hundreds of landscape and townscape paintings will be created by local and visiting artists and the new works will be displayed and sold at an auction at the MARC, 111 East 100 North, at the end of the week, officials said. The artists also have the opportunity to win awards for their work.

A presentation to offer insights into how to begin an art collection, “Learn The Art of Collecting,” will be offered to the public on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. at the MARC. Donna L. Poulton, the curator of Art of Utah and The West at The University of Utah’s Museum of Fine Arts will be the guest speaker for the free event.

Plein air painting was launched by French Impressionists in the late 1870s and has become popular in the U.S. during the last decade. Artists set up their easels in picturesque spots of their choice and transform their experience into immediate works of art. Rain, wind, and quickly changing colors are all part of the challenge of painting in the open air.

More than 120 artists are scheduled to attend this year’s event.

Art sales will be held Oct. 9 at Castle Creek Winery at Red Cliffs on state Route 128, and again Oct. 11-13 at the MARC. A special event has been introduced this year: the “Sneak Peek Wine Reception.” Scheduled for Friday, Oct. 12 from 3-5 p.m. at the winery, the reception is described as “a garden affair complete with hors d’oeuvres, wine and soft drinks.” The event also includes an exclusive first viewing of the main competition art sale.
