The Grand County High School varsity volleyball team went 3-5 over a three-day span last week, including a region loss to San Juan at Blanding on Thursday, Oct. 4.
The Lady Devils got off to a slow start against San Juan, dropping the first two games by scores of 25-15 and 25-10. In the third and final game, Grand rallied to get close, but ultimately lost, 25-20, which dropped them to 1-4 in Region 15 play.
Following that game, the Lady Devils traveled to Richfield for a two-day invitational tournament Oct. 5 and 6 that pitted them against several 2A teams, including some from other regions.
The Lady Devils won two of three matches on Friday, defeating both Wasatch and Piute by 2-0 scores (the tournament matches were all best-of-three instead of the usual best-of-five games). Grand then lost to Enterprise, 2-0 (25-10, 25-12), but still advanced to play in one of the upper pools on Saturday.
In pool play, Grand lost to North Sanpete in two games, both of which ended 25-20. The Lady Devils then lost to Richfield in two games, before bouncing back to defeat North Summit in two games (25-18, 25-22). That qualified the Lady Devils to advance to the “silver” finals round.
“It was single elimination from that point, and we came out so strong against Pine View,” said GCHS head coach Deb Hren. “We won the first game, but then lost the next two.”
This week, Grand was scheduled to play Monticello at Moab on Tuesday, Oct. 9, with the Lady Devils wearing pink jerseys for their annual “Swing for Life” campaign to raise money to fight breast cancer.
Then, on Oct. 12 and 13, Grand will return to the Richfield area to play South Sevier on Friday, Oct. 12 and Richfield on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Lady Devils’ final regular-season game will be at home on Tuesday, Oct. 16 against the San Juan Lady Broncos.
