The Lady Devils took the first two games against the Region 16 champion Lady Bulldogs, by scores of 25-19 and 25-23. Gunnison came back to win the fourth game, 25-15, but Grand rebounded to win the fourth and final game by the score of 25-19.
The Lady Devils then advanced to the quarterfinals against Beaver later that afternoon. Beaver won the first two games, posting scores of 25-16 and 25-14. Grand came back to win the next two games, 25-17 and 25-23. The fifth and deciding game, as always, was played to 15 points, and Beaver ended up winning 15-10.
Grand dropped into the one-loss consolation bracket for Friday’s matchup against Millard, which also went the full five games. The Lady Devils lost the first game 25-18, but won the second and third games, 25-16 and 26-24. Millard won the fourth game 25-14, after which the Lady Eagles also clinched the match by winning the fifth game, 15-13.
The Lady Devils finished the year with a 15-13 overall record. The varsity squad will lose six seniors to graduation next spring: Nikita Nelson, Mikenzee Nelson, Carly Dalton, Kenzie Taysom, Gaby Meyer, and Linda Minor. Nevertheless, head coach Deb Hren said she expects next year’s team to be competitive, thanks to several underclassmen with varsity playing experience. Those younger players include Sydney Lema, Tiffanie Whipple, Kasey Betts, Haley Rice, Jessica Valdes, and Cammy Beeman, Hren said.
