Founder Suzan Martin said the event is aimed toward visitors as well as local citizens. Those who wish to register can still do so at www.moabseniorgames.com. The event will also offer a natural health and wellness clinic for all participants, Martin said.
“It is a great event,” Martin said, adding that she conceived the idea as a way to encourage people to be active.
The number of registered entrants was unavailable, although Martin said she does not believe a high number of participants is important to make the event a success.
A total of 12 events will be held during the games. The featured events for the inaugural Moab Senior Games are archery at the Old Spanish Trail Arena, men’s and women’s five-spot basketball at the Center Street gym, bridge at the Grand Center, social and competitive golf, along with long-drive, chipping and putting contests at Moab Country Club, horseshoes at Old City Park, pickleball at the Center Street gym, a race walk/run along the Mill Creek Parkway, dancing at the Grand Center, swimming at the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center, tennis and track and field at Grand County High School and volleyball at the Center Street gym.
Martin said a summer version of the games, geared toward less-active Moab residents, also is in the planning stages.
“We’re looking forward to doing it in the summer,” she said. “The summer games will be marketed more toward people here in Moab. It will be a little more for those who are inactive, with card games and billiards. It won’t be so strenuous [as the November games],” she said.
Organizers are still in need of volunteers for the upcoming games. A meeting for volunteers is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Grand Center.
