A Moab woman was arrested Oct. 25 on charges that she was driving under the influence of alcohol. Because two young children were in the vehicle, and they were not wearing seatbelts, the woman, 35, also faces charges for violating state child restraint laws, according to a report from the Moab City Police Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:21 p.m. when a police officer saw the vehicle the woman was driving back out of a driveway with no headlights turned on. The officer followed the car and saw two children in the back seat, according to the report. The vehicle stopped twice in the middle of the road on 200 South for no apparent reason, according to the report. The officer initiated a traffic stop and noted that the driver appeared to be intoxicated, according to the report. She failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested.
The children were placed in the custody of their grandparents, according to the report.
Phone scam reported in Moab
A 77-year-old Moab woman outsmarted a con man who claimed to be her grandson. The man called Oct. 23 and asked the woman to wire him $3,800, saying he was arrested in Mexico on drug charges. The man told her he was her grandson and gave her a phone number that he said was for the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.
The woman, instead, called her grandson, who answered and told her he was fine and not in Mexico.
Bicycle stolen from bar
A Moab woman contacted police on Oct. 27 to report that she had parked her bicycle – a black Electra cruiser – at a local tavern and when she came back outside at 2 a.m. her bike was gone, according to a Moab City Police report. The woman said her cell phone was in the basket of the bike, along with a pair of shoes.
Man arrested for DUI
A Moab man was arrested Nov. 3 after a Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped the vehicle the man was driving for failing to use a turn signal.
The trooper suspected the man was intoxicated and ultimately arrested him for driving under the influence of alcohol and for driving on an alcohol-restricted license, according to a report from the UHP.
Man arrested for fleeing accident scene
Moab City Police and a Utah Highway Patrol trooper located a man on Nov. 2 who was suspected of leaving the scene of an automobile accident in Moab. According to a UHP report, the man was suspected of being intoxicated when the crash occurred.
The officers located a man matching the description given by a witness to the accident, according to the report. While talking with the man, the UHP trooper noticed a tattoo on the man’s neck which matched a tattoo that had been identified on a suspect in a hit-and-run incident two weeks prior. The man was taken into custody for public intoxication and fleeing the scene of an accident.
