Playing in the non-region contest at Duchesne on Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Lady Devils kept the game close in the first period, trailing just 4-2 after eight minutes of play. But Duchesne outscored Grand 11-3 during the second quarter to take a 15-5 halftime lead. The Lady Eagles extended their lead in the second half and coasted to victory.
“We should have beaten Duchesne,” GCHS head coach Rick Lopez said afterward. “We missed six or seven easy layups that game, so that’s at least 12 more points we should have had. We would have at least been in the game.”
Grand also shot poorly from the free throw line, converting just three of 17 attempts during the game.
But it was the Lady Devils’ inability to keep a consistent offensive pace that ultimately kept them from winning, Lopez said.
“We’re just not moving the ball quick enough,” he said.
Grand was led by Brook Schultz, who scored six points, while Torrie Lopez and Symony Call each added four. Teaven Fredericks contributed three points and Madi Jones scored two.
Grand did see some success with its junior varsity team later in the week, when the younger girls traveled to Blanding for a weekend round robin tournament. The Lady Devils beat Monticello but lost to San Juan at that event, coach Lopez nsaid.
This week, Grand’s only scheduled varsity game is at Green River on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The Lady Pirates defeated Grand by a wide margin at Moab on Nov. 20, but coach Lopez said he thinks the Lady Devils will be better prepared to move the ball offensively this time around.
“If we can beat their pressure defense and score some fast-break baskets, hopefully we’ll be able to stay with them or even beat them this time,” he said.
After this week’s contest, the Lady Devils won’t have any more games over the holiday break. Grand’s next scheduled game will be a region contest against Richfield at Moab on Friday, Jan. 4.
