Mayhem will rule the day at the Old Spanish Trail Arena on Jan. 19 as more than 70 roller skaters from across the Four Corners area converge on the arena for the Moab Roller Derby’s second annual Midwinter Mayhem Roller Derby Event.

According to Jessica “Evil Lucien” O’Leary, captain of the Moab league, this year’s format will be slightly different from 2012’s highly successful event.

“Last year, we were just feeling it out and trying to get an idea of how many skaters we could get to show up,” O’Leary said.

Due to increased interest in the event, the league decided to move the action from the Grand County Middle School gymnasium to the arena, located at 3641 S. U.S. 191.

“We decided to move to a bigger venue,” O’Leary said. “We’re renting a special floor from Colorado to put on top of the dirt.”

The money raised at last year’s event helped pay for the league’s travel costs throughout the rest of the year, O’Leary said.

“We’ve had to travel a lot this year,” she said. “We’ve played a game every month.”

The league planned this year’s event to last most of the day, which should result in more action for spectators, she said.

Last year, we scheduled three games,” she said. “This year, we have two full-length bouts, six mini bouts and a couple of scrimmages.”

The first bout will begin at 11 a.m.

“People can come and go all day,” O’Leary said.

Last year, the skaters from the Moab league were split up for the final bout, with some skating for Moab and some competing for a Colorado team. This year, the Moab league will join forces with skaters from Spanish Fork and Salt Lake City against derby girls from Grand Junction, Durango and Cortez, Colo.

“It’s going to be Utah versus Colorado,” O’Leary said.

Maureen “Mosama Bin’ Lappin’” Clapper said that she’s excited about the event, even though she isn’t sure she’ll be able to skate in the main bout. Recovering from a recent foot injury, Clapper said that she will not be doing any jamming. In roller derby, jammers are the offensive players who score points, while the other members serve as defense to keep the other team’s jammer from scoring.

“I’ll be blocking,” Clapper said.

O’Leary said the Midwinter Mayhem won’t be the league’s only home bout for 2013.

“We’re planning two more,” she said.

The other two bouts will be held at the Grand County Middle School gym, 439 South 100 East, on Feb. 23 and April 6.

Tickets for the Moab Midwinter Mayhem are $10 for adults. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. More information is available at the Moab league’s website, www.moabrollerderby.com.
