Moab Regional Hospital has announced the addition of Dr. Richard Nielsen, board certified ear, nose and throat specialist, to the hospital’s growing list of visiting specialists. Nielsen is the senior physician at the Ear, Nose & Throat Center in Salt Lake City, according to a news release.

“It has been many years since we’ve been able to offer ENT consultations and surgical procedures in our community,” said Vicki Gigliotti, chief clinical officer of Moab Regional. “We are now able to offer tonsillectomies and ear tube procedures right here in Moab, as well as consultations on other ear, nose and throat issues.”

Nielsen graduated from the Creighton University School of Medicine in 1971 and completed his internship and general surgery residency at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, Calif. He specialized in otolaryngology at the University of Utah.

As a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Nielsen spent two years in Frankfurt, Germany, where he received the Army Commendation Medal as Staff Otolaryngologist. During his career he has held a number of key administrative posts including chief resident, Division of Otolaryngology at a University of Utah Affiliated Hospital; secretary, Utah State Society, ENT; chairman, Division of ENT at Primary Children’s Medical Center; chairman, Department of Surgery at Holy Cross Hospital; director of Residency Training, Otolaryngology at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center; and chairman, Credential Committee at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center.

He also served as editor of Otolaryngology News. Nielsen is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Council of Otolaryngology; American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology; American Medical Association; Utah State Medical Society; Salt Lake County Medical Society; and Utah Otolaryngologic Society.
