After reading the Jan. 17 newspaper, I felt compelled to respond to the letter about “promoting Satan.”

First, the mascot is the Red Devils (not Satan) and it is for the high school. The age group of the high school is 14 to 18 years old, an age where most children have been taught by their parents what is right and wrong.

I believe the mascot at HMK is a Griffin and at the middle school it is a Thunderbird. I don’t see anyone protesting those. What does it say about a community whose mascot is, say, a bronco or ram? Are they into animal worship or worse?

Second, the letter writer’s idea to get creative with an idea to change the mascot is fine. I don’t agree with it. However, with a school district that is just getting its finances back in order, will her group be creative in finding the money to replace everything involved with the change? Think about it. Every team uniform, bus decals – the list goes on. Not to mention the lack of money that will be felt by the alumni of GCHS who quit making donations because, as an alumni, we are Grand County Red Devils!

Third, I wonder if the writer has spent time with the students, educators, debaters, cheerleaders, Devilettes and athletes of Grand County High School? Trust me when I say they are a great group of kids and Satan in no way has a strong hold of them.

I am so proud of the kids at GCHS and I do not say that just because I have one student there. While, yes, there may be a bad apple or two, as that is anywhere. I know first hand that if you need help and these kids find out they are always willing to lend a hand, whether it benefits them or not.

I am a Red Devil, as is my husband and three of my four children will be too. We will always be! If the mascot is changed what will it do to the kids who are members of the school when the change happens and they are wearing letter-jackets with the devil on it? Who buys the new one?

These kids are proud of who they are. Why should we take that from them? Red Devil Pride!
