Grand managed to score just one point in each of the first two quarters as the Lady Wildcats stormed to a 34-2 halftime lead. In the second half, the Lady Devils scored four points in the third period and three in the fourth, but ended up just shy of double figures for the game.
Brook Schultz, Torrie Lopez, and Symony Call scored three points each to account for the Lady Devils’ final tally.
Ten different Richfield players scored during the game. Madison Utley led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with nine points. Throughout most of the game, Richfield played its substitute players.
“We turned the ball over a lot, and made a lot of bad passes,” said GCHS assistant coach Ryon Jones. Jones filled in for head coach Rick Lopez, who didn’t make the trip to Richfield due to illness.
The loss to Richfield dropped the Lady Devils to a 2-11 overall record. Grand is 0-5 in Region 15 play, with two region games remaining on the schedule: at Emery on Tuesday, Feb. 5 and against San Juan at Moab on Thursday, Feb. 7.
According to coach Lopez, Grand must win at least one of those games, and possibly both, in order to have any possibility of qualifying for the state playoffs, which begin the following week.
“We still have a chance of making the playoffs,” Lopez said this week.
The Lady Devils’ only scheduled game this week was a non-region contest against Dove Creek, Colo., on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Moab.
