Red Devils qualify nine wrestlers for state, including three divisional champs

  Nine of the 10 Grand County High School wrestlers who competed in the 2A Divisional meet at Richfield Feb. 8-9 qualified for the state tournament.

  Three Red Devils won the divisional championship in their respective weights: junior Gage Lindquist (113 pounds), senior Trenton White (152 pounds), and junior Edgar Gomez, wrestling at 285 pounds (heavyweight division).

  Lindquist, who pinned Millard’s Payton Scott in the first round of the championship match, also was named the Most Valuable Wrestler of the tournament for the lower half of the weight classes, according to GCHS head coach Dennis Wells.

  White and Gomez also won their divisional titles by beating opponents from Millard in the finals. White defeated Kaden Masner on an 8-6 decision, while Gomez pinned Braden Dixon in the first round.

  Several other Red Devils also placed at the divisional meet. GCHS junior Austin Day placed fourth in the 182-pound category; sophomore Ronnie Dolphin took sixth in the 145-pound category; sophomore Robert Allred placed sixth in the 132-pound category; freshman Seth Holyoak placed eighth in the 126-pound category; and sophomore Andrew Hugentobler placed eighth in the 120-pound category.

  Grand’s top wrestler at 120 pounds, senior Dexter Sheets, was sick for several days last week and missed the tournament, Wells said.

  In addition, junior Jaydan Olsen, wrestling at 113 pounds, finished in seventh place in the tournament’s junior varsity bracket and will compete in the state JV tournament.

  Grand scored 144 team points at the divisional tournament, earning sixth place overall out of nine teams. Millard was the overall winner with 368.5 points.

  GCHS sophomore Justin Moore, who lost both of his matches in the 106-pound category, was the only Red Devil at region who did not earn a spot at the state tournament, but Moore says he hopes to qualify next year.

  Grand’s qualifying wrestlers will head to Utah Valley University in Orem for the state tournament this weekend, Feb. 15-16.
