I also have a difference of opinion over the name that has been given to our sports teams, the name “Red Devils.” We all know that the devil is an enemy to all mankind and his nature is to steal, kill and destroy. He rules through lies, deceit, cruelty and the people under his control are child molesters, wife beaters, and murderers. I am ashamed that we would give our sports teams such a degrading name.
I have lived in Moab almost 60 years and I have never felt good about this name “Red Devils.” There are some who will say to you what difference does a name make, or what’s in a name? There is very much in a name. In Matthew, Chapter 16, Jesus asked his disciples the question “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” and they said, “Some say that thou art John the Baptist; some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.” Jesus said unto them: “But whom say ye that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed are thou, Simon Barjona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, (Gk. Petros meaning a small stone) and upon this rock (Greek: Petra, meaning a massive rock or a rocky cliff) will build my church (i.e. He will build His church on Peter’s solid confession.); and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
We find that Peter, the “small stone,” became the leader of the early church and did many miracles. He led many people to accept Christ as their Lord and brought honor and glory to the name of the Lord.
I have a name I would like to suggest replace the name “Red Devils” and that is “Red Rocks.” Moab is known far and wide as the city of red rocks. If there are others who agree with me and would like to contact me, my address is 2560 Spanish Valley Drive, Moab, Utah, 84532.
