This is the closest region result in many years, said coach Boyd Bryan. Seventeen GCHS students qualified for the state tournament, which will be held at Bingham High School March 15-16.
Bryan and coaches Ryan Hand and Sarah Sidwell were “extremely happy” with the qualifying of so many students “and look forward to having a real chance to place at this year’s state tournament,” Bryan said.
Several GCHS students turned in outstanding performances, including Mary Rice, who took first place in the Lincoln/Douglas category and third place in Extemporaneous Speaking. Anna Scherer and Deanna Irvin both took second place in Public Forum, Kris Kemp placed second in Spontaneous Argumentation, and Emilia Cabelos placed fourth in Congress. Sarah Quigley and Robin Willscheidt tied for first place in Oratory, Dexter Sheets placed second in Oratory, Meera Edwards took second place in the Impromptu category and Anna Scherer took fourth in Impromptu.
Boyd said the coaches and the team are excited about their chances at the state tournament and will be focusing on their strengths in the time that remains before the tournament.
