The Grand County High School softball team beat Duchesne at Moab last week, then won one of four games at a weekend tournament in St. George.
Against Duchesne in non-region action on Tuesday, March 12, the Lady Devils scored seven runs in the first inning and 10 more in the second as they shut out the Lady Eagles by the score of 17-0. The game was called after three innings.
Grand’s Donna Snow threw a one-hitter and picked up the pitching victory. Leadoff batter Amanda Sheets belted two triples in the first inning. Also getting extra base hits for Grand during the game were Morgan Dalton with two doubles and Madi Jones with a double.
A few days later, at the weekend Snow Canyon tournament in St. George, Grand started off with an 11-4 loss on Friday, March 15, against the Hunter Wolverines. The following day, the Lady Devils lost to Bountiful 12-3 and Wasatch 8-4, but managed to defeat Union by the score of 13-2.
Freshman Rhiannon Bohannon was the winning pitcher in the Union game, as regular starter Donna Snow sat out the game due to an injury.
“Donna only pitched for us that first game on Friday, and then we rested her because she had a pulled groin,” said GCHS head coach Stephanie Cluff.
Cluff added that she hopes Snow will be able to recover in time to take the mound during region play, which was set to begin this week.
The Lady Devils are now 4-4 overall in preseason action, including a 9-5 win over Carbon at Moab to start the season on March 6 and a split series in games against Cyprus High School March 8 and 9. Senior Linda Minor belted a home run for Grand in the win over Carbon.
The Lady Devils are scheduled to play the San Juan Lady Broncos at Moab in Grand’s first region game. That contest was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, March 19. After that game, Grand won’t play again until after spring break, when the Lady Devils are scheduled to play Emery on April 2.
