Against the South Sevier Rams at Monroe on April 2, the Red Devils fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but Grand’s Jacob Francis later managed to tie the score with a goal of his own.
Late in the game, however, the Rams’ Ammon Cornelius scored the game winner as South Sevier pulled out a 2-1 victory.
“We really didn’t play like we should have, and couldn’t capitalize on anything,” said Francis, a junior who now has six goals on the season.
Two days later, on Thursday, April 4, Grand traveled to Gunnison for a rematch against the Bulldogs, who had beaten the Red Devils 3-0 on March 7 at Moab.
This time around, Gunnison came out on top again with a 3-1 win, as the Bulldogs consistently controlled the tempo of the game. Sophomore Andrew Hugentobler scored Grand’s only goal during the first half, while the Bulldogs managed to get two goals from Diego Avila and one from Isaias Ruiz.
Grand dropped to 4-6 overall, 3-4 in region play with the losses. The Red Devils are now in the middle of the pack in the seven-team 2A East region with five games left in the season schedule.
The Red Devils’ only scheduled game this week is a home match against the North Sevier Wolves on Thursday, April 11. Grand previously beat the winless Wolves 10-2 at North Sevier on March 14.
Next week, Grand will play its final home game, against Wasatch Academy, on Tuesday, April 16. The Red Devils’ three remaining games after that are all on the road.
