Grand County schools set schedules for student orientation, registration for 2013-2014 school year

It’s a sure sign that summer is coming to a close – at least for local kids. Grand County schools are scheduled to begin classes for the 2013-14 school year on Thursday, Aug. 15.

All Grand County School District schools have also scheduled registration and orientation sessions for new and returning students. Registration for Grand County High School students is set for Tuesday, Aug. 6, and school photos will be taken at that time. Helen M. Knight Elementary School will hold registration and orientation Aug. 5-9, and Grand County Middle School has scheduled orientation for Aug. 13-14. Details and specific times are included below.

Grand County High School

Now in his seventh year as principal at GCHS, Stephen Hren will be joined by new administrative staff as Cari Caylor takes over the role of associate principal. worked as the Careers and Technical Education director. Jim Stocks will assume administrative duties as the school’s CTE department director.

There are several new faces on the GCHS staff this year, including a new Spanish teacher, a new special education teacher, a new photography teacher, plus a few new para-educators and teaching assistants. Ann Arehart will be the new school secretary.

The first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 15. Registration for high school students (grades 9-12) is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The designated times for each class are as follows: seniors from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., sophomores from 10 to noon, juniors from 1 to 3 p.m. and freshmen from 3 to 5 p.m. Any desired class schedule changes will be handled on Aug. 7 and 8, school officials said. Anyone who misses registration may also come in to the school during regular work hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays) and register any time before the first day of school to get schedules and locker assignments and pay fees. A make-up photo session will take place later for those who missed getting their school picture taken at the Aug. 6 registration.

Parents and guardians should also make sure they have received instructions on how to use the SIS grade and attendance monitoring system to check student progress and receive regular updates via e-mail. School lunch may also be paid for on-line, and parents can also apply for free or reduced price lunch on-line as well.

Incoming ninth-graders and their parents or guardians are also invited to attend a freshman orientation session at the school on Wednesday, Aug. 14 from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

The high school’s daily schedule begins at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m., with each of the five class hours being 70 minutes long on regular school days. Mondays are early-out dismissal days, with school letting out 50 minutes earlier, at 1:45 p.m.

The school’s fall sports teams are already gearing up for action. The Red Devil football, volleyball, girls tennis, girls soccer, boys golf, and cross-country teams will all start practicing and playing soon, as will the swim team, now starting its second year.

Fall homecoming will be early this year, the first week of September (the four days following Labor Day, Sept. 2). The homecoming assembly, parade, and football game will take place on Sept. 6, according to the school’s calendar.

Grand County Middle School

Incoming middle school students and their parents or guardians are encouraged to attend Grand County Middle School’s orientation sessions on Aug. 13 and 14.

On Tuesday, Aug. 13, incoming seventh-graders will attend orientation between 1 and 4 p.m., in one-hour sessions based on the student’s surname. Incoming eighth-graders will attend orientation the following morning, on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. until noon, again in three separate one-hour sessions based on last name.

Incoming students are required to have their immunizations up to date and on file before they can begin attending school. For more information about immunization requirements, contact the school office at 259-7158 and/or the local health department at 259-5602.

At each orientation session, students will receive their schedules, locker assignments, a list of required supplies, and other important information. Some supplies will be available for purchase at the school store.

School fees include the following: $20 basic activity fee, $20 gym fee for physical education uniforms and equipment, $5 for student planners, and an additional $10 fee for seventh-graders for a career and technical education introduction class. In addition, there are a few other classes that may require additional fees, including art, drama, and band.

All middle school students and their parents are also invited to attend Back to School Night on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. School pictures are scheduled be taken on Sept. 10.

The GCMS Thunderbirds football and volleyball teams, which are operated as Moab City Recreation programs, have already begun practicing and are scheduled to begin playing soon.

Helen M. Knight Elementary School

Helen M. Knight Elementary School will be registering students in grades 1-6 during the week of Aug. 5-9, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Kindergarten registration already took place back in May, but any new kindergartners who did not previously register, are also encouraged to come in and register during that same registration week (Aug. 5-9), school officials said.

“All students, whether they attended HMK last year or not, need to come in and fill out the registration paperwork every year,” said Sandy Foy, the K-3 office secretary.

One new change this year is that first-graders will attend school all day and go home at 3:15 p.m. along with the students in grades 2-6, instead of with the kindergartners, who will still be dismissed one hour earlier, at 2:15 p.m. This schedule applies to Tuesdays through Fridays; Mondays will still be early-out days for all students, who will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m.

Also, all students must have their immunizations current before they can begin attending school, Foy said. For additional information regarding school immunization requirements, contact either of the HMK school offices, the school district office at 259-5317, or contact the local health department at 259-5602.

According to school policy, children enrolling in kindergarten must be at least 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2013. First-time students are required to show a certified copy of their birth certificate or other reliable indicator of the student’s identity and age.

HMK students in grades 1-6 will start school on Thursday, Aug. 15. Kindergartners will have their assessments during the first week of school (personal schedules have already been mailed out), after which they will start attending class on either Wednesday, Aug. 21 (for those whose surnames start with the letters A through L) or Thursday, Aug. 22 (for letters M-Z). Starting Friday, Aug. 23, all kindergartners will attend class together, Foy said.

School starts at 8:15 a.m. every weekday. On early-dismissal Mondays, all students are let out at 12:45 p.m. On the other four days of the week, students in grades 1-6 will be dismissed at 3:15 p.m., while kindergartners will leave one hour earlier, at 2:15 p.m.

When they start school, HMK students will be given an orientation packet that will include a calendar, school policies, and many other helpful resources.

The school has two Back to School Nights scheduled, as follows: Aug. 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. for students in kindergarten through third grade, and Aug. 27 from 7 to 8 p.m. for students in grades four through six.
