The event featured both a 5k and a 10k race course. Three of Grand’s cross country runners competed in the 10k (6.2 miles) race, which including a long, grueling two-mile uphill run in miles four and five.
GCHS senior Jackson Knowles was the Red Devil’s top finisher in the 10k race, completing the course in fourth place overall with a time of 36 minutes, 26 seconds.
“Jackson picked up right where he left off at the end of last cross-country season,” GCHS cross country coach Randy Martin said. “Jackson ran an outstanding race at the state championships last October and came into this season in great shape and ready to compete.”
Finishing behind Jackson was freshman Alan Snow who completed the event in 13th place overall with a time of 43:14. Freshman Jayelyn Knowles was the second-place overall female runner and finished for the Lady Devils at 17th overall with a time of 44:54.
“I was very impressed with the performance of both Alan and Jayelyn” Martin said. “To run as well as they did in their first race, particularly one as difficult as a 10k race as freshman, is very exciting”.
Four GCHS runners competed in the 5k (3.1 miles) race. GCHS freshman Cameron Wakefield led the Red Devils in that event with a time of 23:22, finishing fourth out of a field of 152 runners. Coming in closely behind Wakefield was Lady Devil senior Mercedes James, who was the second overall female in the 5k race. James finished the event in sixth place overall with a time of 23:48.
“Cameron ran an outstanding race from start to finish” Martin said. “We are very fortunate to have a very talented freshman class joining our team this season.”
GCHS freshman Mackay Wakefield finished the 5k in 14th place overall with a time of 26:42, while sophomore Annie Heywood placed 20th overall with a time of 29:59.
“It is nice to see our runners have this type of success at the end of our pre-season, considering the long, early morning runs and the many, many miles these runners have all run so far this season,” Martin said.
The Red Devils next scheduled meet, and the first official event of Grand’s season, is the Highland Invitational held at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Aug. 22.
