The Lady Devils swept South Sevier, winning all five matches. In No. 1 singles, sophomore Kayla Weston posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while No. 2 singles player Brityn Ballard won her matches 6-0, 6-1 and junior Robin Willscheidt won the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-2.
Playing at No. 1, doubles Jacey Johnson and Cora Johnston defeated their opponents 6-2, 6-1, while Madison Stocks and Shalia Harmison teamed up to win 7-5, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.
Scoring in the matches against Emery High School earlier that morning was closer, but the Lady Devils still prevailed 3-2 overall, winning their three singles matches but losing their two doubles contests.
Against Emery, Weston defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, while Ballard won 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Willscheidt also won in No. 3 singles, defeating her opponent in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
In No. 1 doubles, Johnson and Johnston lost in two tiebreaker sets, 6-7 (2-7), 6-7 (4-7). Stocks teamed with Kim Lewis in No. 2 doubles, but Lewis ended up withdrawing due to an injury during the match, so Grand lost by the score of 5-7, 3-6.
Grand’s junior varsity girls tennis players also saw action against Emery in single-set matches, with Harmison and Cassidy Walker winning their doubles set 6-1. Emma Sweeny and Deanna Irvin teamed to win 6-2, while Tierra Hawks and Mandolin Wilkinson won 6-3. Brittnee Lewis and Gabby Martineau lost 1-6. In JV singles, sophomore Tressa Renn lost 0-6. Kyra Scovill and Irvin also played Renn and Rebecca Minor in a non-scored scrimmage JV match.
The previous week, the Lady Devils tennis team defeated Carbon High School at Price on Aug. 16, but lost against Uintah High School in Vernal the following day, Aug. 17.
The team’s next home matches will be a doubleheader against Gunnison and Manti on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The matches are scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
