The Lady Devils were supposed to have played both Gunnison and Manti on Sept. 10, but both matches were postponed due to heavy rainfall.
Against the Lady Broncos at Moab on Sept. 12, Grand’s only victory was in No. 1 doubles, when Jacey Johnson and Cora Johnston teamed up to defeat their Lady Bronco opponents, 6-3, 6-3.
In No. 1 singles, sophomore Kayla Weston suffered a 1-6, 1-6 loss, while teammate Brityn Ballard, also a sophomore, was defeated 0-6, 1-6 in No. 2 singles.
Robin Willscheidt, a GCHS junior, lost 3-6, 2-6 in her No. 3 singles match.
In No. 2 doubles, Madison Stocks and Shalia Harmison won their first set 6-3, but lost the next two, 1-6 and 4-6, to drop the match to the Lady Broncos.
Grand’s players fared better in the junior varsity matches played that afternoon.
“San Juan had so many players that our girls got to play several matches,” said assistant coach Emily Johnson.
Among those winning their one-set junior varsity matches for the Lady Devils were Kim Lewis and Becca Farnsworth (7-5), Cassidy Walker and Sadie Bown (6-5), Deanna Irvin (6-3), Brityn Ballard and Kayla Weston (6-1), Jacey Johnson and Becca Farnsworth (6-2), Cassidy Walker and Deanna Irvin (6-1) and Kayla Weston and Sadie Bown (6-2).
Grand was scheduled to play a match at Parowan on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and added a match at Gunnison at 10 a.m. on the same day to make up the postponed contest from the previous week. The time of the Parowan match was moved from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. because of the additional match and travel time.
