The Grand County High School softball team opened its season with mixed results on the road against the Morgan Trojans on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. The Lady Devils lost their varsity game 4-2 on Friday, but Grand came back to win 9-6 on Saturday.

Morgan’s Addie Jensen threw a two-hitter on Friday, striking out 17 batters in the process.

“She threw nine pitches in the first inning, striking out the side,” said GCHS assistant coach Carrie Valdes.

“She has a great riser that was hard for us to hit,” added GCHS head coach Brook Shumway.

Jensen pitched only part of the game the next day, and Grand went on to win that contest. Freshman Tia Shumway was the winning pitcher for the Lady Devils.

“We hit a lot better the second day,” said coach Shumway, who noted that Grand’s junior varsity team won handily on both days.

More than two-dozen girls are on this year’s softball roster, the majority of whom are underclassmen. Among the team’s handful of seniors are first baseman Jessica Valdes, and outfielders Tymberly Fredericks, Alena Geiser and Chelsey Day.

The juniors on the squad include returning players Caitlin Pfnister, Cammy Beeman and Kesley Backus, in addition to newcomer Sadie Hansen.

The team has several underclassmen who are expected to see varsity playing time, including pitchers Rhiannon Bohannon and Tia Shumway.

Besides Bohannon, the other sophomores on the team include Kennedi Patterson, Kylie Haycock, Madi Jones and Michelle Lopez.

In addition to Tia Shumway, the other freshmen on the team include Alexa Pierce, Anissa Geiser, Delanee Olsen, Ellie Kelly, Krystal Beck, Michelle Valdes, Molly McKinnon and Rylee Pruitt.

This coming weekend, the Lady Devils are traveling to St. George to play in an invitational tournament at Snow Canyon High School on March 14 and 15. Grand’s varsity and junior varsity teams are scheduled to play two games each on both days, Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Devils’ first home game of the season will be on Friday, March 21 against San Juan.
