Merlyn was born on June 25, 1938, in Murdo, S. D., to the late Bernard and Ann Jonkers Stainbrook. He married the love of his life, Carma Jean Olsen, on May 23, 1956.
He leaves behind a legacy of a 57-year marriage, six children: Vickie Jean (Harold) Remund (Midway, Utah), Kerry (Tricia) Stainbrook (Lincoln, Calif.), Kellie Sue (Daryle) Carroll (Elko, Nev.), Shawn (Colleen) Stainbrook (Carson City, Nev.), Cherie Lynn (Blake) Teansky (Hotchkiss, Colo.) and Kimberly (Randy) Clift (Tolleson, Ariz.); as well as 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Merlyn spent most of his working life as a hard rock uranium and gold miner in Nevada, California and the Moab area. He always loved hunting, fishing, golfing, working on his Spring Creek property on his tractor and was a very good amateur photographer. He will always be remembered by friends and family as a hard worker, a loyal friend and a good, honest man.
A graveside memorial service will be held for Merlyn on Sunday, April 27 at noon at the Spanish Valley Sunset Memorial Cemetery south of Moab. Merlyn requested his remains be cremated so there will not be a viewing. The service will be informal and brief, just the way I am sure he would have liked it to be. All family and any friends who would like to attend are welcome.
