Entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed from Region 15, Grand upset the No. 1 seeded Altamont Longhorns in the first round, winning by a score of 4-1 on Thursday, May 8. Rhiannon Bohannon went the distance on the mound for Grand in picking up the pitching victory. She allowed just two hits and struck out 13 batters. Offensively for Grand, Caitlin Pfnister belted a home run and a double, and Michelle Lopez also hit a double.
The Lady Devils then advanced to face Gunnison later that evening, but lost that contest 6-5. Bohannon again pitched the entire game, recording five strikeouts and allowing six hits, all singles. Grand also struggled offensively, managing just five hits, all singles.
With that loss to Gunnison, the Lady Devils dropped into the one-loss bracket and had to face American Leadership Academy at 8 p.m. Thursday evening. The Lady Devils defeated ALA 9-2. Freshman Tia Shumway pitched the entire game, striking out three and allowing four hits. Pfnister and Kesley Backus each hit a home run, and the Lady Devils had five other base hits during the game.
Grand played South Summit on Friday afternoon. The Lady Wildcats won that game 9-5, ousting the Lady Devils from the double-elimination tournament. Bohannon pitched until the sixth inning, when she was relieved by Shumway. Grand allowed 10 hits during the game, including a home run and a double. Offensively, Backus and Kylie Haycock both hit doubles for Grand.
Manti ended up winning the state 2A softball championship by defeating San Juan 8-4 in the finals. South Summit went on to finish third in state.
