Sara “Sally” Kathryn Dendel passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the Fountains at Sea Bluffs in Dana Point, California. She was the daughter of Harry and Edna Denman and was born in Akron, Ohio.

Sally attended and graduated from Michigan State University where she majored in zoology. It was there she met the love of her life, Hamilton “Ham” Dendel. On June 20, 1943, at the age of 23 and 22, the two married in Clarke County, Georgia. Ham was still serving in the U.S. Navy at the time.

After leaving the Navy, Ham worked for Standard Oil of Indiana and Sally became a housewife and mother. They had four children, Kathy, Joanne, Phil and David.

Ham and Sally were constantly on the move and lived from east coast to west during their lives together. They loved Moab, Utah, the best!

Sally was a true adventurer and was full of curiosity, and loved to travel. She liked to explore and share new adventures. Sally had traveled extensively during her life and had explored many distant continents.

She was a long-standing member of the Audubon Society. Sally always had her bird book and binoculars in hand wherever she traveled. In her later years Sally loved to volunteer. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was a lifetime sorority sister with Alpha Chi Omega. Sally volunteered for 15 years at the Ocean Institute located in Dana Point Harbor.

She is survived by her four children, Kathy Rhodenbaugh, Joanne Dendel, Phil Dendel and David Dendel; her four grandchildren, Kurt Rhodenbaugh, Kara Anthony, Ranna Dendel and Jenny Dendel; her five great-grandchildren, Parker, Trevor, Jason, Kate and Darien; and by six nieces and nephews. Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Ham; her parents, Harry and Edna; Carol, her only sibling; and her granddaughter, Angela.

Sally will truly be missed. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Ham and Sally are together again looking for their next new adventure.

Memorial services will be held in Willow Basin, Utah, later this summer. The date and time is to be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Audubon Society or Ocean Institute of Dana Point in the name of Sally Dendel.
