On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Grand County High School volleyball team traveled to Blanding to face the San Juan Broncos. The Lady Devils lost that hard-fought region match in five sets, all of which were close.

Grand won the first set 25-21, after which San Juan bounced back to win the second set, 25-19. Grand then won the third set 25-18, but dropped the fourth set, 22-25.

In the fifth and deciding set, played to 15 points, the Lady Broncos prevailed 15-13 to capture the match.

Senior Kennedi Patterson led the Lady Devils with 14 kills, while fellow seniors Madi Jones and Tracy Dalton both had several assists.

“It was a tough loss,” said GCHS head coach Brittney Melton. “We were confident going into the match but let up in the wrong places. We had some crucial mistakes with missed serves and sending easy balls out of the court.”

Melton said she let the girls have a few days off after the tough loss to San Juan.

“It was quite refreshing and they came back today re-energized,” Melton said. “We are looking forward to going to Monticello this week, along with hosting Manti and Gunnison. We are very confident for the region games since we were able to put both of those teams away in three [sets] last time we met them.”

The Lady Devils — now 3-2 in Region 15 play — have a good chance of making it to state if they finish strong in their remaining regular season games, Melton said, adding that with four home region games remaining on their schedule, the Lady Devils will enjoy having a home court advantage for those contests.

“Every game we’ve played has been so close it could have gone either way,” Melton said. “The home games we have left are all very important.”

After playing at Monticello on Thursday, Oct. 1, Grand will host Gunnison on Friday, Oct. 2, with the varsity game starting at 6 p.m. The Lady Devils will then host Manti on Saturday, Oct. 3, with the varsity game starting at 3:30 p.m.
