Veda Gritts, a sophomore at Grand County High School, has been invited to represent Utah on the 2017 Utah Mountain Conference Girls Basketball Team, according to event sponsor Down Under Sports.

Gritts is scheduled to depart for Queensland, Australia, on Monday, July 10 to compete for individual honors and a team championship title.

As each participant must raise money to cover the cost of the nine-day trip, Gritts and her family are currently seeking donations and sponsors to help her achieve her fundraising goal.

Gritts was the Lady Devils’ leading scorer this year, averaging 11.2 points per game. She also led the team in rebounds and blocked shots. She recently received an honorable mention in the Deseret News’ all-state 2A team listings.

Gritt’s stepmother, Brandy Gritts, said that in addition to Veda and other family members working to raise money, several local businesses have already showed their support with donations and sponsorships.

Brandy Gritts said the family will be holding a four-day fundraiser during Jeep Safari week to help with the effort. That fundraiser will be held in front of the Speed Queen, 702 S. Main St., from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, April 10 through Thursday, April 13.

“We will have some fun Easter items, Farm House Fudge, and a bake sale,” she said.

“We have quite a way to go in our efforts to get her to Australia, and all money must be in by June 2,” Brandy Gritts added, noting that tax-exempt donations may be also made online at www.downundersports.com.

“Just make sure to put Veda Gritts as the athlete, the state of Utah, and girls basketball as the sport,” she said.
